Many of the species at the Caldwell Zoo are endangered or threatened in the wild. Giving these animals a safe environment while helping to maintain the genetic diversity of the species are two of the zoo’s highest priorities. Situated just east of Tyler, Texas, these are the largest lakes in the area in addition to Lake Palestine. Ownership by the City of Tyler Lake Tyler functions as a major recreational center for the area, and as a supply of drinking water for the City of Tyler. The Lake Tyler Department of the City of Tyler maintains the park areas adjacent to the lake. The rules and regulations for Lake Tyler and Lake Tyler East are outlined in Chapter 19, Article VI of the City of Tyler Code of Ordinances. Characteristics of the LakesLake Tyler (West), built in 1949, covers 2,224 surface acres and serves as the major source of water supply to the Tyler metro area. Lake Tyler (East), completed in 1966, covers an additional 2,276 acres. The maximum depth of the lakes is 40 feet, and the average depth is about 17.6 feet. The conservation pool elevation is 375 feet above mean sea level. Fluctuation is about 2 feet.

Legacy Trail, officially opened in July 2019, is the newest trail to the City of Tyler. The 4.5 mile trail is 10 foot wide concrete and runs on the eastern and western sides of Old Jacksonville Highway, running Toll 49 and continuing toward Flint. The trail is situated on the Old Cotton Belt train route which was instrumental in the growth of East Texas. Future plans for this trail include a possible extension northward to the South Tyler Trails linking Rose Rudman Recreational Trail. Open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The trail begins off of W. Cumberland near Faulkner Park across from Cherryhill Drive with a trail head located at the entrance to Three Lakes Parkway off of Old Jacksonville Highway, south of FRESH by Brookshires. Following the trial from this point southwest will lead you past Toll 49 towards Flint.

In 1963, Tyler Junior College (TJC) opened the first planetarium located in East Texas. Originally known as the Hudnall Planetarium, it was reopened in 2011 after a major expansion and renovation of its facilities and renamed The Center for Earth and Space Science Education. Home to the first 40’ Spitz nano-seam domed theatre in East Texas, the state-of-the-art Planetarium features an immersive, full-dome video experience. The new theater is equipped with Digitarium Aethos, the latest in digital projection technology. The facility also features interactive displays and exhibits, classroom and outdoor play spaces.

Founded in 1899 as a subscription library by the Tyler Federation Of Women’s Clubs and located above the old Tyler Electric Company offices on the north side of Tyler’s downtown courthouse square, the Tyler Public Library soon moved to the then City Hall and subsequently became a city department in 1903. The next year it moved nearby into its own building donated by Andrew Carnegie on College Avenue which was to be its home until 1980 when the present three-story building opened on College across Elm Street to the south. As a department of the City, the Library is directed by a City Librarian who answers to city management and is advised by a seven-member advisory Library Board appointed by the City Council.
