Tyler Civic Theatre

Things to Do · Tyler

Tyler Civic Theatre evolved from Tyler Little Theatre, formed in 1927. Stage productions were performed on a speaker's platform at Tyler High School and on the stage at the Women's Building on South Broadway. In 1939, the Little Theatre erected its own building at the corner of Houston and Glenwood Streets. During WWII, performances were discontinued and the building sold with proceeds held in trust by the City of Tyler. But Tyler's love of local theatre never waned, and when its men returned from the war, they brought new enthusiasm and ideas. Al Gilliam formed the Circle Theatre at Tyler Junior College, staging productions with audiences surrounding them. The shows proved so popular that a group of Tyler citizens rallied to revive its own city theatre and in 1949, Tyler Civic Theatre was born. Gilliam was named its first resident director and, in 1951, the group opened the nation's first building to be built specifically for in-the-round presentations.

Tyler Tortilla Factory

Eat & Drink · Downtown

Welcome to the Tyler Tortilla Factory, your place for homemade tamales and tortillas in Tyler Texas. We offer tasty, delicious corn and flower tortillas, homemade chips and salsas, and our famous tamales made with the Correa family recipe. We are proud to have served delicious Mexican products to everyone in East Texas for over 35 years. For years, Mr. Correa traveled to Dallas to buy Mexican products unavailable in Tyler. Each weekend, the Hispanic community eagerly awaited his yellow station wagon for deliveries of tortillas and sweet bread. His route through the district became routine. In 1979, Mrs. Correa suggested starting a business to relieve Mr. Correa from door-to-door deliveries. This led to the opening of the Tyler Tortillas Factory in April 1986, initially producing corn tortillas and later adding flour tortillas, chips, salsas, and tamales. After Mr. Correa passed away in 2001, Mrs. Correa continued the business with her daughter and son-in-law, James and Araceli Wiley. The factory incorporated in 2005 and continues to thrive, serving delicious Mexican products to East Texas
